Bunnies aren’t the only animals that “breed like rabbits!” In just a few years, two adult dogs or cats can create thousands of puppies/kittens, so make sure to spay/neuter your pets.

Spaying/Neutering Benefits

  • Spaying/neutering a cat or dog keeps down the unwanted litters that end up on the street and in shelters. NOTE: by ordinance, pet breeding is not allowed within City limits.
  • Spayed/neutered pets are, typically, better behaved and more calm and affectionate than those that are not spayed/neutered.
  • Male cats are less likely to spray urine and mark their territory, especially if neutered before developing this habit.
  • Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle, thereby eliminating regular bleeding, and the incessant crying and nervous behavior that often accompanies the heat cycle.
  • Not only will spaying/neutering your pet result in lower licensing fees, but it can be beneficial for the health of your pets.
  • It’s better to spay your female pet before she goes into heat for the first time. This reduces the risk of breast cancer and eliminates the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer in your dog. Neutered males will not develop testicular cancer and their risk for developing prostate cancer is greatly reduced.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL pets adopted from the shelter have been spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated, and tested for heartworm/feline leukemia/AIDS.
The City of Columbia and Richland County residents are eligible for a free spay/neuter voucher from The Animal Mission. Please call (803) 776-7387 for details.
