The Adoption Process

Adopting a shelter pet can be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Our adoption process is simple- visit the shelter, sign in, and our staff will be happy to help you find your perfect match!

Spend time with your chosen pet(s) to make sure this is the pet you plan to commit to for the rest of its life. Once you’ve chosen your new pet, head to the front desk! Finalizing the paperwork is quick and easy and in most cases, your new pet can go home with you the same day! Please be patient with your new pet, and keep in mind that it will take time for your new best friend to adjust to their new home environment. Learn about the “3-3-3- Rule” below!

At the time of adoption, all animals are:

Spayed or Neutered

Up to date on all vaccines

Microchipped

Dewormed

Heartworm Tested (dogs)

Provided a starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food

Foster to Adopt

Columbia Animal Services offers a Foster to Adopt (“FTA”) option for select pets, giving potential adopters a 14-day trial period to ensure the pet is a good match before finalizing the adoption. This program is intended for individuals who are committed to adopting but want to confirm compatibility first. After the 14 day period (or at any point before that), you can finalize the adoption or return the pet to the shelter. FTA is not intended for foster cases.

If you are interested in Foster to Adopt, please consult with one of our adoption counselors at the time of adoption.

Finalize Your Adoption

Take your newly adopted pet home and enjoy each other’s company! Make sure to ease into things, and ensure that any introductions between your new pet and any pets already in the home are done so in a gradual, controlled manner. It will take time for your new best friend to adjust to their new environment. Be patient, respectful, and keep The 3-3-3 Rule in mind!

  • 3 DAYS: Within the first three days, your new pet may feel overwhelmed. They may not want to eat or drink, and they may test their boundaries. This is okay and to be expected; please be patient! This is also the time you will want to establish a veterinary relationship with a local vet. Schedule an appointment within one week to 10 days from adoption to ensure your newly adopted pet is healthy and thriving.
  • 3 WEEKS: After three weeks, your newly adopted pet is starting to settle in, they start feeling more comfortable, and establish a routine. This is also when some behavioral issues may arise. Remain patient, work with them, and if needed, look into a trainer.
  • 3 MONTHS: After three months, they will finally feel completely comfortable in their new home, they are set in their routine, and they have finally started to build a strong bond with you.
